The birth of Melbourne traces back to 1835 when settler John Batman declared a point on the northern bank of the Yarra River as "the place for a village." In 1837, surveyor Robert Hoddle designed Melbourne's central grid pattern, aligning it with the Yarra River and creating main thoroughfares 30 metres wide along with narrower east-west service lanes.
This grid became Melbourne's central business district (CBD), bounded by La Trobe Street, Spring Street, Flinders Street, and Spencer Street. The spacious layout of the city centre has allowed Melbourne's tram network, including environmentally friendly electric trams, to remain in place despite the increasing demand for road space.
The suburbs surrounding Melbourne's CBD are North Melbourne, Parkville, Carlton, Fitzroy, East Melbourne, Richmond, South Yarra, Prahran, St Kilda, Albert Park, South Melbourne, Southbank, Docklands, and West Melbourne.
Melbourne's city centre boasts spacious, tree-lined streets, many featuring tram lines and supporting eco-friendly transportation options, such as electric vehicles (EVs). The retail precinct includes the Melbourne Central Shopping Centre, complete with its own underground railway station, the Bourke Street Mall, the Swanston Street Mall, and Collins Street, home to exclusive fashion and jewellery stores. The city is becoming increasingly EV-friendly, installing EV chargers at various locations.
Chinatown, established during the gold rush of the 1850s, is located along the eastern end of Little Bourke Street, offering traditional Chinese shopping and dining experiences. A well-known landmark, Federation Square, is across the road from Flinders Street Station and opens onto the Yarra River and adjacent parkland, featuring cafes, restaurants, and a large central square.
Melbourne blends old and new with exclusive shopping arcades, the bustling Queen Victoria Market, and historical landmarks from centuries ago, coexisting alongside modern office towers. The Rialto Towers in Collins Street is the CBD's tallest building, rising to 251 metres. Melbourne's city skyline can be seen from the taller Eureka Tower across the Yarra River in neighbouring Southbank.
Melbourne takes pride in its extensive parklands, many centred around the Yarra River to the southeast of the CBD. Birrarung Marr, Melbourne's newest park, is next to Federation Square. The Kings Domain and Royal Botanic Gardens feature the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, several lakes, historical monuments and memorials, and pathways traversing manicured gardens and lawns. The Shrine of Remembrance, in Kings Domain, is the scene of an annual Anzac Day dawn service, offering a visitor centre and a viewing balcony with spectacular views. Across the Yarra River are Melbourne Park and Olympic Park, featuring international standard sporting and entertainment arenas.
Melbourne embraces sustainability and eco-friendly initiatives.
We love installing EV Chargers in Melbourne CBD!
